2008 is the International Year of Sanitation, which aims to speed up the process towards achieving the MDG sanitation target. The German Toilet Organization (GTO) was founded to contribute with awareness raising, advocacy and sanitation marketing to the success of the world campaign.
The web portal of the GTO contains background information about the importance of proper sanitation for world development, the 2008 campaign and its projects. The International Development Research Centre also provides a good summary of the issue in a slideshow.
